Project Overview
We’re proud to be working alongside Plainmoor Swimming Pool in Torquay, one of the town’s most valued community-run facilities, to deliver a renewable energy solution that supports long-term sustainability and energy independence. We substantially upgraded the Solar PV system with 50kw hours worth of battery storage and upgraded all of the internal lighting to LED making it more efficient and self-sufficient for the majority of the year.
As a charity-run pool, Plainmoor faced the growing challenge of rising energy costs. In response, they successfully applied for a local council grant and turned to Electrix Renewable as a trusted, local supplier to find a cost-effective and environmentally responsible solution.
Solar Panel Installation with DNO Considerations
Although the site had existing solar panels in place, the pool needed to increase its capacity to make a real impact on energy consumption. A key challenge was the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) restrictions limiting the number of panels that could be added. We worked closely with all stakeholders to reconfigure the system, maximising panel numbers within the permitted capacity while still delivering the performance the facility required.
Thanks to these upgrades, as of February, the pool has already become self-sufficient in daylight hours, generating all the energy it needs from dawn to dusk—an incredible milestone in its journey to energy independence.
Carbon Reduction and System Upgrades
Our involvement went beyond solar. Following an energy performance review, we supported the pool in implementing a Carbon Reduction Plan, advising on the latest high-efficiency pumps and lighting solutions to further reduce running costs.
One notable improvement was the installation of low-level, energy-efficient lighting around the pool area, which has made the pool more accessible for water polo and evening use—enhancing the experience for the community and reducing energy use at the same time.

This project demonstrates what can be achieved when community values, forward-thinking planning, and renewable technology come together. Plainmoor Pool is now saving thousands of pounds on energy bills annually - money that can be reinvested into improving the facility and keeping it open for the people of Torbay.
