We install a lot of different charger brands and never isolate our decisions to any single one. We consider all of our customer’s needs and what we like about Easee is a combination of build quality, a genuinely good app, a clean and compact installation, and a low rate of callbacks once the charger is in. This post explains what Easee actually offers, why we recommend the Easee One so often, and where it might not be the right fit.

Who are Easee?

Easee is a Norwegian company, founded in Stavanger in 2018, with a simple goal of making EV charging smarter, smaller and more dependable. They have since become one of the largest charger manufacturers in Europe, with several hundred thousand units installed across the continent. In the UK they have picked up a run of consumer awards, including being named Best Home Charger at the Auto Trader New Car Awards and topping What Car’s annual home charger survey on customer satisfaction.

That track record matters to us. We install a lot of chargers and we see which ones cause problems two years down the line. Easee’s reliability record, combined with the fact that faulty units are repaired rather than simply swapped out under warranty, gives us confidence recommending it.

The Easee One: small charger, properly thought through

The Easee One is Easee’s home charger and the one we install most. The first thing most people notice is the size. At under 2kg and roughly the size of a paperback book, it is one of the smallest 7.4kW chargers available, which matters if you are mounting it somewhere with limited wall space or simply do not want a large box on the side of your house.

It delivers up to 7.4kW on a standard single-phase supply, which is what the vast majority of Devon homes have. That is enough to fully charge most electric vehicles overnight, adding somewhere in the region of 25 to 30 miles of range per hour of charging.

Tethered or untethered, your choice, from the same unit

Most chargers force you to choose between a tethered version, with a cable permanently attached, or an untethered version with just a socket. The Easee One does both from the same hardware. You can lock your own cable into the unit through the app to use it as a tethered charger, or leave it as a socket and use whichever Type 2 cable you prefer. It is a small thing, but it removes a decision a lot of customers find genuinely difficult when ordering.

Three chargers, one fuse

If you have two electric vehicles, or you are fitting chargers across a small row of properties, the Easee One can run up to three units from a single fuse, with the chargers communicating wirelessly to balance the available power between them. This can mean a real saving on the electrical infrastructure needed for multi-car households, since you are not necessarily paying for a second dedicated circuit.

Built-in connectivity, no Wi-Fi headaches

Every Easee One comes with a built-in eSIM and lifetime mobile connectivity included. That means the charger does not depend on your home broadband signal reaching the wall it is mounted on, which is a common cause of frustration with some other smart chargers. It also supports Wi-Fi if you prefer to use that instead.

Safety and compliance

The Easee One was built specifically for the UK market and includes integrated open PEN conductor protection, which removes the need for a separate earth rod on most installations. This keeps the install tidier and can reduce the overall cost. It also includes RCD protection covering both AC and DC fault currents, and continuous monitoring for voltage and earth leakage faults, alerting you through the app if anything is detected.

The app and smart charging

The Easee app is one of the simpler, cleaner EV charging apps we have used. You can start and stop charging remotely, schedule charging sessions, lock the charger to prevent unauthorised use, and review your charging history and energy usage. It works well alongside smart electricity tariffs, letting you schedule charging to take place automatically during the cheapest overnight rates.

Built-in RFID support also comes as standard, so you can restrict who is able to use the charger, which is particularly useful for shared driveways or small business installations.

What about solar?

This is the one area where we are upfront with customers. The Easee One does not include native solar diversion in the way a charger like the Zappi does. If you want the charger to automatically prioritise surplus solar generation, you will need to add the Easee Equalizer accessory, which unlocks solar charging modes on top of the standard unit.

If solar charging is your main priority and you want that functionality built in from day one without an additional accessory, we will usually point you towards Zappi instead. We are not precious about which brand we recommend. We would rather steer you to the right charger for your situation than push whichever one happens to be cheapest for us to source.

Easee Charge: the commercial option

For workplaces, car parks and multi-unit sites, Easee’s commercial charger, Easee Charge, scales up to 22kW on a three-phase supply or 7.4kW on single-phase. It uses the same dynamic load balancing approach as the Easee One but extends it across a whole site, automatically managing power distribution as more vehicles plug in so you are not forced to over-specify your electrical supply to cope with peak demand.

This makes it a sensible option for businesses planning workplace charging for multiple employees, or for landlords managing charging across several units.

Our honest take

What we like about Easee is a combination of build quality, a genuinely good app, a clean and compact installation, and a low rate of callbacks once the charger is in. For most home installations without a strong solar diversion requirement, the Easee One is usually our first recommendation.
